African art is a collection of artistic expressions produced by the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa throughout history. The African continent hosts a wide variety of cultures, each characterized by its own language, traditions and characteristic artistic forms. Although the vast expanse of the Sahara desert acts as a natural dividing barrier between North Africa and the rest of the continent, there is considerable evidence confirming a whole series of influences between both areas through trade routes that crossed Africa since ancient times.
The main topics of the artistic objects are:
Fertility, for humans and nature
Death, because for them, the dead are still alive as spirits
Spirituality, the fetishman or nganga is also a doctor, psycologist and spiritual guide
African cultures are animistic, that is, every beings and natural phenomena have a spirit or soul. When someone died, the spirit is separated from the body and patrol around the place where lived. They inhabit the sculptures, saved by their families. Harmony in the family and the clan
Fetishes: objects with supernatural powers. Among them, there are shrines to save objects, with nails for evil influences, to transmit messages to spirits and commemorative figures
Masks: used to capture the supernatural energy of the spirits, in funerary and magic rituals or ceremonies for fecundity of the land. They also symbolize the dead people
Body decoration: in the examples, there are Surma people (2), Yoruba people, Nuba people, Mursi people, Maasai people, and Fulani people (2)
Pottery
Textiles
Rock art: in the examples are Dogon, San, Chad and Tadrart Acacus
Music: Cicle of Life, The Lion King by Hans Zimmer & Elton John
