Political defection in Nigeria is not new, about 20 NCNC members defected to the Action Group in 1951 to block Nnamdi Azikiwe from becoming Premier of the Western Region. Since then, defections have often been driven by opportunism and self-preservation, a pattern also seen in the Second Republic when politicians moved from UPN to NPN.
