Mozambique Faces Security Vacuum as Rwanda Warns to Withdraw Troops | Firstpost Africa | N18G

Rwanda has warned it will withdraw its counterterrorism troops from northern Mozambique unless long-term funding is secured, a move that could destabilise the region. About 2,500 Rwandan soldiers and police have been deployed in Cabo Delgado since 2021 to help Mozambican forces combat the Islamist insurgency that has killed over 6,400 people and displaced more than 800,000. The European Union has provided $23 million in support, but the true cost of the mission is claimed to be at least ten times higher. Analysts warn withdrawal would create a serious security vacuum and threaten billions in energy investments, leaving the province highly vulnerable.
