African leaders pledge further engagement in peace process after day of talks in Kyiv

African countries are prepared to participate further in a peace pact in Ukraine, South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday (June 16) after a meeting between African leaders and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kyiv, during which he called for a free flow of grain.

Ramaphosa said that African leaders were "here to share the African perspective" on finding peace in Ukraine, during a joint news conference with the Ukrainian leader.

The African delegation, including leaders of Senegal, Egypt, Zambia, South Africa and the Comoros, met Zelenskiy after being greeted in Kyiv by a volley of Russian missiles.

They are due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Saturday (June 17)

Ramaphosa said on Friday there must be a de-escalation on both sides of the war in Ukraine, and peace should be achieved through negotiations and diplomatic means.

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema said it’s important that “we in the continent of Africa contribute to peace in Ukraine”
