The Dark Side of Pablo Picasso

Although Picasso never visited Africa, his interest in its art is well documented, from his discovery of African masks at a museum Paris in June 1907. He became an avid collector of African art. Here’s the interesting twist. It is public information and well documented that in 1920, Pablo Picasso said of African art, "L'art nègre? Connais pas." This translates in English to "African art? Never heard of it!" This was a bold denial, not only of African influence but of the very existence of African art.

This was very ironic for a man who was later found with a collection of African art. Some analysts say that regardless of what you think of Pablo Picasso, whether you like his art or not, it's hard to deny that he is perhaps one of the most influential, most prolific and most important artists of the past 100 years.
