France pushing for military invasion to protect uranium mines interests - Niger Coup

Niger Coup - France pushing for military invasion to protect uranium mines interests - Freelance Journalist, producer, and analyst at Channel Africa SABC, Izak Khomo, has waded into the conversation on the military coup and Niger and the potential military intervention being threatened by the ECOWAS bloc. In an interview with SABC News, the renowned analyst was asked what he thought about the potential invasion of Niger and what that could mean for the Nigerien people. Izak Khomo opined that ECOWAS does not really intend to send a military force to Niger, and the Nigerien people themselves are against any form of invasion to depose the current junta. According to him, the true force behind the calls for the invasion of Niger is France, which he claims wants to restore normalcy in the West African nation only to secure its economic interests, mainly uranium mining.
Izak Khomo's assessment appears to hold weight given the historical context of France's significant uranium interests in Niger. The country has indeed relied on Niger's uranium to ensure its energy security, facilitated by agreements with the deposed government of President Bazoum. With these agreements now void due to the junta's cancellations, France faces a potential disruption to its uranium supply chain. Given this economic vulnerability, it is easy to see why France could be motivated to influence international actions to restore a favourable government in Niger, thereby safeguarding its uranium interests. While geopolitical considerations and regional stability remain important factors, the economic dimension highlighted by Khomo sheds light on the potential motivations behind the calls for intervention, underlining France's interests in maintaining access to Niger's uranium resources.
