ECOWAS puts military troops on standby – is Niger headed for war? | DW News
The possibility of war in Niger is still very much on the table. Today, leaders from West Africa agreed to deploy a standby force that could be ordered to restore democracy in Niger if the country's military leaders do not. It has been two weeks since the military staged a coup.
Yesterday, the generals appointed a new government, showing no signs of backing down. It is seen as yet another act of defiance against open and veiled threats being made by West African leaders. Where is this headed? Could Niger and its neighbors be on a collision course… headed for war?
To discuss this, we’re joined by Kamissa Camara. She's the former minister of foreign affairs in Mali and is a senior advisor on Africa at the US Institute for Peace.
