Man Utd lift the Premier League trophy for the fourth time in five seasons

After the euphoria of England's run to the UEFA Euro 1996 semi-finals on home soil and a gripping title race between Manchester United and Newcastle United the previous Premier League campaign, the two sides were the main protagonists again in 1996/97, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side winning their fourth PL crown in just five seasons.


Newcastle, who had let a 12-point lead slip to Man Utd in 1995/96, made a statement of their intent clear with the world record signing of England striker Alan Shearer, who arrived at his hometown club from Blackburn Rovers for £15m in July.


But it was another English star, who had not featured in Euro 1996, that made his mark on the opening day of the season. Manchester United academy starlet David Beckham scored from inside his own half as the Red Devils beat Wimbledon 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

Fabrizio Ravanelli, who joined Middlesbrough after scoring in Juventus' UEFA Champions League final victory over Ajax the previous season, scored a hat-trick in Boro's 3-3 draw with Liverpool on his debut in August. Other notable recruits included his former Juve team-mate Gianluca Vialli at Chelsea, for whom Ruud Gullit was made player-manager after an impressive debut season, while Patrick Vieira arrived at Arsenal and Patrik Berger joined Liverpool, who saw legendary striker Ian Rush depart for Leeds United.

After two defeats from their opening three matches Newcastle won six on the bounce before they welcomed Man Utd to St James' Park in October. The Premier League leaders thrashed the defending champions 5-0, with Philippe Albert's sublime chip rounding off a memorable victory. A shock 6-3 loss to Southampton and a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea followed for Man Utd.

But United soon embarked on a 16-match unbeaten run, starting with a 1-0 win against Arsenal, who had appointed Arsene Wenger as manager from Japanese side Nagoya Grampus Eight the previous month. It was the first defeat of Wenger's long and successful reign at the north London club, and it allowed Man Utd to wrestle the momentum back in the 1996/97 title race.

United's form was inspired by Eric Cantona, who scored a sublime chip in a 5-0 win against Sunderland. That was one of 11 strikes in 1996/97 for the Frenchman, who netted over 10 goals for the fourth successive Premier League campaign before announcing his shock retirement in May at the age of 30.

In this video we cover the #success of African venture capital through 2022. Africa witnessed a remarkable surge in the VC space, with startups raising $4.8 billion. However, this accounted for only 1.2% of the total global startup funding. One prominent venture fund, Launch Africa Ventures, stood out by investing $36.3 million in over 110 startups across 21 African countries. The fund primarily supported seed and pre-Series A startups, offering an average investment of $250,000 to $300,000. Despite the growth, Africa's startup funding still has ample room for expansion on the global stage.

Fintech proved to be a critical sector in Africa, with numerous "mega deals" exceeding $100 million. Notable fintech players included Flutterwave, MNT-Halan, Interswitch, and MFS Africa. However, there was a slight decline in the sector's share of funding, decreasing by 16% between 2021 and 2022. Despite this, the African Development Bank emphasized the importance of innovation and financial services for inclusive growth.

Peppa Pig is a lovable but slightly bossy little pig. She is four years old and lives with Mummy Pig, Daddy Pig and her little brother George. Peppa likes playing with her best friend Suzy Sheep, visiting Granny and Grandpa Pig and looking after George. Most of all, Peppa loves jumping up and down in muddy puddles, laughing and making loud snorting noises.
George Pig is Peppa’s little brother. He is 18 months old and loves to play with his big sister, Peppa – even when she’s being bossy. George’s favourite thing is his toy dinosaur. He carries it everywhere with him. George can’t speak yet but can say one word very well: ‘Dine-saw!’
Mummy Pig likes jumping up and down in muddy puddles almost as much as Peppa. She works from home on her computer and sometimes lets Peppa and George help, as long as they don’t bash the keyboard. She is better at map reading than Daddy Pig and is very wise about most things.
Daddy Pig is very jolly and laughs all the time, especially when he plays with Peppa and George. Daddy Pig reads the paper and gets excited about trips in the car. He loves cookies and pumpkin pie and Peppa teases him about his big round tummy. Daddy Pig can be a tiny bit grumpy sometimes when he can’t remember where he put his glasses.

Ainda não chegamos à metade do ano, mas o Cerrado já atingiu um novo recorde de desmatamento, tanto no mês de maio quanto no acumulado anual, da série histórica, iniciada em 2019.

Segundo dados do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), entre janeiro e maio deste ano foram desmatados mais de 3.320 km² do bioma, um aumento de 27% em relação ao mesmo período do ano passado.

Enquanto o Cerrado bateu recordes de destruição nos primeiros cinco meses de 2023, o desmatamento na Amazônia Legal caiu 31% na comparação com o mesmo período do ano passado.

Segundo os especialistas consultados pela BBC News Brasil, grande parte da discrepância entre os números mais recentes de desmatamento no Cerrado e na Amazônia pode ser explicada por leis mais permissivas na área de savana.
